Slipcast Cup

This fast-paced project was an introduction to the processes of mold-making and slipcasting. I designed this cup to bring an element of play to users’ everyday environments. By modifying the plaster mold after making several casts, I was able to create two iterations of the form. Slipcast ceramic, glaze.

Iteration 1

After sculpting the mold positive and creating the mold, I cast, fired, and glazed multiple cups. This enabled me to practice building up wall thicknesses with precision, as well as fine-tuning the casts after removing them from the mold. I experimented with a variety of glaze treatments.

Iteration 2

In order to create the second iteration of the cup, I carved directly into the plaster mold to alter the form. I added rounded elements around the form and to its feet. After casting and bisque-firing the cups, I continued experimenting with glazes, using different treatments to accentuate the newly added details.
