Aware Tableware Collection

This tableware collection is designed to create a more mindful experience of eating. Informed by principles of sensory perception, these pieces are designed to slow down the process of eating and heighten users’ awareness of the activity. The pieces’ ovular forms and undulate surfaces impact both visual and haptic perception. A pasta bowl, soup bowl, and dinner plate make up the collection. Slipcast ceramic, glaze.

Process

I began by researching sensory perception, the impacts of attentive eating, and how visual cues influence our eating behaviors. Following this, I began sketching, which allowed me to explore different ways I could apply the insights from my research to my design.

I went on to create loose sketch models out of clay, then sculpted refined positives to use to create the plaster molds.

Below shows the stages of creating the three-piece molds for the collection’s bowls, from creating the clay beds around the positives to casting the final pieces of the molds.
