Galo Pouring Vessel

I designed this sculptural pouring vessel to reinterpret the Galo de Barcelos, a cultural icon of Portugal, in a way that was elegant and modern. The vessel’s formal elements and glaze treatments refer back to the Galo’s distinct aesthetic. Slipcast ceramic, glaze.

Process

I researched different versions of the Galo de Barcelos to inform my design. I noticed its consistent, distinct neck, tail, wings, and pedestal-like base.

I sketched out different ways the elements of the Galo could be modified or exaggerated in my design, so they could provide an elegant, updated interpretation and function as a pouring vessel.

I continued developing my design through rapidly sketching with stoneware clay. This modeling allowed me to quickly adjust design details.

I sculpted a refined positive, also out of stoneware, to create the mold. To ensure that air could escape from the tail and the vessel would properly cast, I included a hole coming off from the tail. Additionally, I rounded the corners of the mold to decrease its weight.
